Traversing the Ganges River from Patna to Kolkata on a mesmerizing journey through different time periods – ancient, medieval and colonial and experiencing the multi-faceted cultures along the riverbank intertwined with the present.
OVERVIEW
The mighty river Ganges, also known as Ganga in Sanskrit, represents grace and timeless existence. For centuries, travellers have explored different parts of the country through the Ganges. Arrival at the Patna airport and proceed for a sightseeing tour visiting the Golghar, Patna Museum and Gurudwara. Thereafter transfer to the jetty for embarking the ship, followed by dinner onboard.
This morning we sail downstream to Simaria. Post lunch visit by walk in the riverside village to see the daily activities of the local people.
We continue our journey further downstream to arrive in Munger. Afternoon visit to the Chandika Sthan Temple, a Shakti Peetha dedicated to Goddess Shakti, where her left eye is said to have fallen. Visit the 12th century Munger Fort and walk in the nearby local market, which is popular for fruits and vegetables and other shops of textiles and readymade garments.
This morning we sail downstream towards Sultanganj, where there are two prominent granite rock-islands in the river that are connected to the mainland by a causeway. On one island is a mosque and on the other is a 16th century Shiva Temple that will be visited. Thereafter sail towards Bateshwarsthan.
Morning excursion to the excavation site of the 8th century Vikramshila University, which along with Nalanda, was one of the most important Buddhist centres of learning. We return to the ship and sail towards Samtaghat.
We will cast off early in the morning to reach the historic Farakka Lock Gate. After crossing the lock we cruisethrough the connecting canal to come on the Hooghly River. We continue sail towards Jangipur.
We sail full day towards Murshidabad, a hidden architectural gem with dramatic whitewashed colonial era structures.
We begin the day by visiting the Katra mosque, with its distinctive minarets. Thereafter proceed to visit the Hazarduari Palace, which dominates the waterfront. Built in the Greek “Doric” style the palace has more than a thousand real and false doors and is filled with colonial era antiques, artwork and manuscripts.
We sail full day today to arrive at the shore-side village of Matiari.
Early this morning walk in the village to see and experience the craftsmen at work creating beautiful handcrafted brass items in their home their workshops. Sail onward to Kalna.
Enjoy a rickshaw ride in Kalna to visit the enchanting Rajbari Temple complex that features diverse architecture and terracotta plaques depicting themes of Hindu epics and various aspects of day-to-day life in the region. Return to the ship walking through the local market and sail onward to Kolkata.
Morning visit to the Flower Market and Kumartuli, a traditional potters’ quarter, renowned for its sculpting prowess. Afternoon Panoramic Tour and visit to Mother Teresa’s Home. Enjoy cultural performance onboard.
Disembark the ship after breakfast and transfer for your onward journey.
